How to Plan a Custom Kitchen Island in Egypt

August 16, 2026 4 min read khashabartiology

A custom kitchen island can add preparation space, storage and a social center to an Egyptian home, but only when it fits the room after doors, appliances and people begin moving. Plan circulation and services first; treat the finish as the final decision.

Decide what the island must do

Write a short priority list before choosing dimensions. Is the island mainly for food preparation, family meals, serving, storage or a sink? Combining every function often creates an oversized block. A compact preparation island with drawers may be more useful than a larger unit crowded with appliances.

Inventory what will live inside it. Deep drawers suit pots and plates, shallow drawers organize utensils, and a tray divider keeps baking sheets upright. Apply the same category-based thinking described in our guide to a custom kitchen pantry.

Test circulation at full opening

Mark the proposed footprint on the floor with removable tape. Open the refrigerator, oven, dishwasher and nearby cabinet doors fully, then walk the route from sink to hob to refrigerator. Two people should be able to pass without trapping the cook or blocking an appliance. Measure from the furthest projecting faces, including handles and counter overhangs.

Accessibility needs vary by household. The U.S. Access Board kitchen guidance explains how clearances, work surfaces and appliances interact in accessible kitchens. Use it as a planning reference, not as a substitute for local requirements or the needs of the people who will use the room.

Choose dimensions from the room outward

Once the surrounding aisles work, the remaining area defines the island. Avoid starting with a showroom size and forcing it into the plan. Counter height should suit the primary task and users. If stools are included, allow a comfortable overhang, knee space and enough room behind occupied seats so the main route remains usable.

Coordinate stool width with supports and cabinet divisions below. The sizing principles in our guide to a custom dining table are useful when estimating personal space and testing chairs, even though an island has different height and support conditions.

Plan electricity and plumbing before fabrication

An island with power, a sink or a cooktop needs early coordination with qualified local trades. Confirm cable and pipe routes, shut-off access, drainage slope, waterproofing and how future repairs can be completed without destroying the cabinetry. Do not hide junctions or valves behind fixed panels.

A sink consumes valuable cabinet volume and may interrupt a clear preparation surface. A cooktop adds ventilation, heat protection and safety questions. If these services complicate the room, keeping the island service-free can make it more flexible and easier to maintain.

Build storage around real loads

Wide drawers need suitable slides and rigid boxes, especially when filled with cookware. Specify load ratings, full extension and soft-close behavior rather than choosing hardware only by appearance. Our guide to drawer slides and cabinet hinges explains the questions to ask.

Place frequently used items near the work face and less-used serving pieces toward the social side. Avoid doors opening into a busy aisle. Rounded or eased external corners can reduce painful impacts in a tight room, while a durable kick area protects the base from shoes and mopping.

Select durable surfaces and details

Choose a counter based on stain resistance, heat behavior, joint requirements and repairability. Large overhangs and heavy stone require properly engineered support. Agree on seam positions, edge profile and the relationship between the counter and cabinet before ordering either component.

Kitchen fronts face grease, moisture and frequent wiping. Ask for a finish sample, check edge sealing and understand which cleaners are safe. For timber or veneer, our guide to wood finishes for furniture in Egypt provides a useful starting point.

Approve the island with a practical checklist

  • Tape out the footprint and test all walking routes.
  • Open every nearby appliance, door and drawer fully.
  • Confirm seating, knee space and support positions.
  • Coordinate power, plumbing and service access with qualified trades.
  • Specify drawer loads, internal storage and hardware.
  • Approve counter support, seams, edges and finish samples.

A successful custom kitchen island feels like part of the room rather than an obstacle placed in its center. When circulation, storage and services are resolved first, the island can support everyday cooking and gathering for years.
