Bed and Mattress Sizes in Egypt: A Practical Guide

Choosing a bed in Egypt starts with the mattress, not the frame. Mattresses here are sold in centimetres, and the same name can mean different sizes from one shop to the next: a "double" might be 140, 160 or even 180 cm wide, and a "king size bed" is not always the same 180 × 200 cm. This guide lists the common bed and mattress sizes in Egypt, explains why the frame is always bigger than the mattress, and shows how to measure a bedroom so the bed, the wardrobe doors and the bedside tables all fit.

Common mattress sizes in Egypt

The table below shows sizes you will find most often in Egyptian mattress shops and furniture showrooms. Sizes are width × length in centimetres. Always check the exact numbers of the mattress you plan to buy, because a few centimetres make a difference to the frame.

Common nameMattress size (cm)Typical use
Single90 × 190 or 90 × 200One child or teenager, guest rooms, small rooms
"One-metre bed" (سرير متر)100 × 200Teenagers and adults sleeping alone who want a little more room
"120 bed" (سرير 120)120 × 190, 120 × 195 or 120 × 200Children's rooms, bunk beds, one adult who wants space

Queen / large double160 × 195 or 160 × 200The most popular size for couples in Egyptian master bedrooms
King size180 × 200Couples who want extra width, or a child who joins in the morning
Super king200 × 200Large master bedrooms only

Length matters as much as width. A 190 cm mattress is fine for most children and many adults, but anyone taller than about 180 cm will usually be more comfortable on a 200 cm length.

Children's beds and cribs

Baby cribs are commonly sold for 60 × 120 cm or 70 × 140 cm mattresses. The larger size lasts longer, because many cribs of that size convert into a toddler bed. Buy the crib mattress at the same time as the crib, or at least confirm its exact size, so there is no gap at the sides where a baby's arm or leg could get caught.

For children past the crib stage, a 90 × 190 or 120 × 190 cm bed is the usual choice. A 120 cm bed takes more floor space but lasts into the teenage years.

Bunk beds

Bunk beds usually take a 120 × 190 or 120 × 195 cm mattress on each level. Check the mattress thickness too: the guard rail on the upper bunk has to stand well above the top of the mattress, so a very thick mattress on the top level reduces the protection. Bunk beds should also be fixed to the wall; our guide to preventing furniture tip-over explains how.

The frame is bigger than the mattress

A frequent mistake is to measure the room for the mattress size and forget the frame. The bed you place in the room is larger than the mattress for several reasons:

  • Side rails and frame: the rails around the mattress add a few centimetres on each side, more on designs with a wide upholstered or wooden surround.
  • Headboard: a headboard adds depth at the head end and can add width if it extends past the rails. Tall or padded headboards take more space than a plain panel.
  • Footboard: a footboard adds length and changes how much walking space you have at the foot of the bed.
  • Drawers and lift-up storage: drawers under the bed need space to open, usually at least their own depth plus room to stand. A lift-up base needs nothing at the sides but needs clearance above.

Before you order, ask for the external dimensions of the bed (width, length and headboard height), not only the mattress size it takes.

How to measure your bedroom

  1. Draw the room. Measure every wall, and mark doors, windows, air-conditioning units, sockets and switches. Note which way the bedroom door opens.
  2. Place the bed first. Mark the external size of the bed frame, not the mattress, on your drawing. The headboard usually goes on a solid wall away from the door.
  3. Leave walkways. As a rule of thumb, leave at least 60 cm of clear floor along each side of the bed that people use, and more at the foot if a wardrobe or dresser faces it. Around 70 to 90 cm feels comfortable.
  4. Allow for wardrobe doors. Hinged wardrobe doors swing out roughly their own width. If a wardrobe faces the bed, measure from the wardrobe front to the bed frame and make sure the open door does not hit the bed. If the space is tight, sliding doors need no swing room.
  5. Allow for drawers. A drawer in a dresser or under the bed needs its full depth to open, plus space for you to stand in front of it.
  6. Add the bedside tables. A bedside table is often 40 to 50 cm wide. Two of them next to a 160 cm bed frame can take the whole width of a smaller wall, so check the wall length first.

If you are planning a wardrobe at the same time, our cabinet designer lets you try widths and door layouts against the space you have left after placing the bed.

Bed sizes at Khashab

Every bed at Khashab is made to order. Many of the designs in our wooden beds collection come in set sizes for 100 × 200, 120 × 200, 160 × 200 and 180 × 200 cm mattresses, and any other size can be made to measure. The bunk beds in our bunk beds collection usually take a 120 × 190 or 120 × 195 cm mattress, and mattresses are not included with bunk beds.

For other beds, check your quotation to see whether a mattress is included. If you already own a mattress you want to keep, send us its exact width, length and thickness so the frame is built around it. If you want the bed as part of a full bedroom, our room sets show beds alongside matching wardrobes and bedside tables, and our guide to bedroom furniture prices in Egypt explains what drives the cost of a full room.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most common double bed size in Egypt?

For couples, 160 × 200 cm is the most common choice in master bedrooms, with 140 × 190 or 140 × 200 cm in smaller rooms and 180 × 200 cm for those who want a king size bed.

What size is a "one-metre bed"?

It usually means a 100 × 200 cm mattress. The frame around it will be wider than 100 cm, so measure for the frame.

What size is a "120 bed"?

The mattress is 120 cm wide and usually 190, 195 or 200 cm long. Ask which length before you buy sheets or a mattress.

What size is a children's bed?

Cribs commonly take 60 × 120 or 70 × 140 cm mattresses. After that, most children move to a 90 × 190 or 120 × 190 cm bed. Bunk beds usually use 120 × 190 or 120 × 195 cm.

Can you make a bed in a non-standard size?

Yes. Khashab makes every piece to order, so a bed can be built for any mattress size or to fit an awkward wall.
